Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor
The Standard Visitor visa allows you to visit the UK for tourism, business, short-term study (up to 6 months), and other permitted activities.
- You can normally stay in the UK for up to 6 months.
- In certain cases, you may be able to apply for a longer stay (for example, to receive medical treatment).
- Depending on your nationality, you may not need a visa to visit the UK. It is important to check if you require a visa before applying.

Permitted Activities
As a Standard Visitor, you may:
- Visit for tourism or leisure, such as a holiday or vacation.
- Visit family or friends.
- Volunteerfor up to 30 days with a registered charity.
- Transitthrough the UK en route to another country.
- Undertake business-related activities, such as attending meetings, interviews, or conferences.
- Carry out permitted paid engagementsas an expert in your field (e.g., giving lectures, participating in events, or performing).
- Take part in a school exchange programme.
- Undertake a recreational courseof up to 30 days (for example, a dance or art course).
- Study, sit an exam, or complete a short-term placement(up to 6 months).
- Visit as an academic, senior doctor, or dentistunder specific conditions.
- Visit the UK for private medical treatment.
Restrictions (What You Cannot Do)
You cannot:
- Undertake paid or unpaid workfor a UK company, or work in self-employment (unless covered under permitted paid engagements).
- Claim public funds(benefits).
- Live in the UK long-termthrough frequent or successive visits.
- Marry, register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership(you must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa instead).
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify as a Standard Visitor, you must hold a valid passport or travel document covering the entire duration of your stay in the UK.
You must also be able to demonstrate that:
- You will leave the UK at the end of your visit.
- You can support yourself and any dependantsduring your trip, or have funding from a sponsor.
- You can pay for your return or onward journey, or have a sponsor who will cover these costs.
- You do not intend to live in the UK for extended periodsthrough frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home.
Additional Eligibility
Depending on the purpose of your visit, you may need to meet further requirements if you are visiting the UK:
- To study, take an exam, or complete a short-term placement.
- As an academic, senior doctor, or dentist.
- To undertake a permitted paid engagement.
- For private medical treatment.
Applying for a Standard Visitor Visa
If you require a Standard Visitor visa, you must apply online before travelling to the UK.
- The visa costs £127and is valid for stays of up to 6 months.
- You can submit your application up to 3 months before your intended travel date.
Long-Term Standard Visitor Visa
If you travel to the UK frequently, you may apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa, which is issued for 2, 5, or 10 years. Each visit under this visa still allows a maximum stay of 6 months at a time.
Transit Through the UK
If you are only passing through the UK en route to another country, you may use a Standard Visitor visa.
Alternatively, if transit is your sole purpose, you can apply for a Visitor in Transit visa for £70.
Applying for a Standard Visitor Visa
If you require a Standard Visitor visa, you must:
- Apply onlinebefore travelling to the UK.
- Attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC)to provide biometrics and submit any required documents.
The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your intended travel date. You must also meet all eligibility requirements and ensure your planned activities fall within the list of permitted activities.
Visa Exemptions and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Depending on your nationality, you may not need a visa to visit the UK. If a visa is not required, you will either:
- Need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which permits visits of up to 6 months, or
- Be able to visit the UK for up to 6 monthswithout requiring a visa or ETA.
You should check your eligibility and whether you need a visa or ETA before applying.

- Long-term visas allow multiple visits but each stay is limited to 6 months.
