1. General Guidelines – Indian Passport FAQs

• Indian passports are normally valid for:

  • 10 years for adults

  • 5 years or until the minor turns 18 (whichever is earlier)

• Applicants must use the Global Passport Seva Portal (GPSP):

• Applications must be submitted in person at a VFS Global Centre in the UK

• Provide two addresses: one in India (for police verification) and one in the UK

• Signatures must be in blue/black ballpoint pen

• All documents must be original + self-attested photocopy

• Indian passport holders who acquire foreign nationality must surrender their Indian passport

• Lost passports must be reported to UK Police and the High Commission/Consulate

2. Adult Passport (Reissue/Renewal)

 Required Documents:

• Current Indian passport (original + copy)

• UK immigration status proof (BRP, ILR, eVisa with share code)

• UK address proof

• 2 recent passport-size photos (51mm x 51mm)

• Online application form (GPSP) + VFS appointment

3. Passport for Minors

 Required Documents:

• Minor’s birth certificate

• Parent(s)’ passports (copies + originals)

• Parental consent (Annexure D)

• UK immigration proof of both parents

• Address proof (UK + India)

• Photos (with minor’s thumb impression or signature)

4. Passport for Newborn

 Required Documents:

• UK birth certificate of child

• Indian passports of both parents

• Marriage certificate (if applicable)

• Child’s photo

• Proof of address (UK)

• Birth registration with Indian mission (compulsory before applying)

5. Change of Name in Passport

Scenarios:

• After marriage/divorce

• Spelling correction

• Full name change

 Required Documents:

• Old passport

• Marriage certificate / divorce decree / deed poll affidavit

• Newspaper cuttings (for major name changes, in India and UK editions)

• Gazette notification (if applicable)

• Identity proof with new name

6. Lost/Stolen/Damaged Passport

 Required Documents:

• Police report / FIR (mandatory for lost/stolen)

• Affidavit for loss/damage

• Old passport (if available)

• Photos + address proof

• UK visa/immigration proof

7. Emergency Certificate (EC)

 Required Documents:

• EC application form (from VFS or Embassy)

• Proof of Indian nationality (PAN, Aadhaar, old passport)

• Police/Home Office letter (if required)

• Photos (ICAO compliant)

• Travel itinerary (optional)

 Notes:

• EC is not valid for return to the UK

• To be surrendered at Indian immigration

• Issued in exceptional cases only

8. Passport Under Tatkal Scheme

 Additional Requirements:

• Letter stating urgency

• Supporting documents justifying urgency

• Verification details (previous police verification helps)
