Proving Your Knowledge of English
Approved English Language Tests
You can prove your English with a test from a Home Office–approved provider.
The test must be:
- Secure English Language Test (SELT)
- Taken at an approved test centre
- At the correct levelfor your visa
Accepted Test Providers
- IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training)
- Trinity College London – GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English)
- Pearson PTE Academic UKVI
- LanguageCert International ESOL SELT
- PSI Skills for English UKVI
Make sure to book the UKVI version of the test (not the regular IELTS or PTE).
Minimum Level Required
For a partner/family visa, you need to prove your English at:
- CEFR level A1(speaking & listening) if applying for the first time
- CEFR level A2when applying to extend after 2.5 years
- CEFR level B1when applying for indefinite leave to remain (settlement)
Using an Academic Qualification
You do not need a test if you have a recognised degree taught in English.
- If your degree was awarded in the UK→ automatically accepted.
- If your degree was awarded outside the UK→ you must apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) to confirm:
- It’s equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher, and
- It was taught in English.
Documents You’ll Need
When applying, you’ll submit either:
- Your English test pass certificate, or
- An Ecctis statement of comparability(for overseas qualifications).
This means:
- If you already hold a UK or English-taught degree → you can skip the test.
- If not, you’ll likely need to take IELTS for UKVI (A1 level)if it’s your first partner visa.
Options to Prove English Knowledge
Academic Qualification
- If your degree was awarded by a UK university/college→
Just submit your degree certificate. - If your degree was awarded by a non-UK university/college→
You need an Ecctis (UK ENIC) Statement of Comparability confirming:
- Your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher, and
- It was taught in English.
If you already have an Ecctis certificate → you can reuse it(no need to reapply).
Approved English Language Test (SELT)
- Test must be on the Home Office approved list.
- Minimum required level:
- A1CEFR (speaking & listening) → first visa application.
- A2CEFR → extension after 2.5 years (if your first test was only A1).
- B1CEFR or higher → settlement (ILR) after 5 years.
If you take B1 or higher from the beginning, you can reuse the same test result later for settlement (as long as the provider hasn’t withdrawn the qualification).
Summary by Stage
Application Stage | Minimum CEFR Requirement | Notes |
First Partner Visa | A1 | Can use higher (A2, B1, etc.) if you want future-proofing. |
Extension (after 2.5 years) | A2 (if you started at A1) | If you passed A2 or higher earlier, you can reuse it. |
Settlement (ILR after 5 years) | B1 | If you passed B1+ before, you can reuse it. |
This means:
- If you already have a UK degree→ no test needed.
- If you have a non-UK English-taught degree→ get it verified through Ecctis.
- If no qualifying degree → you must take an approved SELT (IELTS for UKVI, PTE UKVI, etc.).
Minimum Income Requirement
- £29,000 per year (gross income)
- This is the combined incomeof you and your partner.
- Applies if you’re applying on/after 11 April 2024.
Exceptions to the income Requirement
- If your partner receives certain benefits(e.g., Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Carer’s Allowance, Armed Forces benefits).
- Instead of meeting the income threshold, you must show “adequate maintenance”(calculated based on your circumstances).
- If you first applied before 11 April 2024
If you entered the route earlier (e.g., as fiancé(e)/proposed civil partner/partner) and are extending →
You’ll continue under the old financial rules (£18,600 threshold, plus extras for children).
How You Can Meet the Financial Requirement
Income Types You Can Use:
- Employment income(salaried or non-salaried jobs in the UK or abroad).
- Self-employment income(sole trader, partnership, director of a UK company).
- Non-employment income(rent from property, dividends, investments, etc.).
- Pension income(state, occupational, or private pensions).
Savings Route:
- If you don’t meet the £29,000 income rule, you can use cash savings
- Minimum savings required: £88,500(held for at least 6 months in your name, partner’s name, or jointly).
Formula used:
(Amount of savings – £16,000) ÷ 2.5 = Equivalent yearly income
Example: £88,500 savings → (£88,500 – £16,000) ÷ 2.5 = £29,000 (meets requirement).
Documents & Evidence You’ll Need
Depending on the source of income/savings, you may need to provide:
- Payslips, bank statements, employment contracts, and employer letters (for jobs).
- Business accounts, tax returns, and HMRC documents (for self-employment).
- Pension statements.
- Bank statements showing savings held for at least 6 months.
Important: UKVI is very strict with financial evidence — even small errors in documents (e.g., missing payslip, incorrect bank statement format) can cause refusal.
