What is an OCI Card?

The OCI Card is issued to foreign nationals of Indian origin who were previously Indian citizens or are descendants of Indian citizens. It enables multiple lifelong entry into India and offers several privileges, though it is not dual citizenship.

How to Apply for OCI Card / Renewal

1. New OCI Registration (first-time applicants)

Required Documents:

  • Current foreign passport (valid for at least 6 months)

  • Cancelled Indian passport or surrender certificate

  • Birth certificate (applicant)

  • Parent’s proof of Indian origin (if born abroad)

  • Marriage certificate (if applying as spouse of Indian/OCI)

  • Passport-size photograph

  • Signature/thumb impression

  • VFS appointment confirmation

2. OCI Renewal Guidelines (as per latest rules)

Renewal is required only in the following cases:

From 2021 circular, uploading documents online is sufficient; re-issuance of OCI card is not needed every time.

  1. Visit  https://ociservices.gov.in

  2. Select: OCI Miscellaneous Services

  3. Upload:

    • New passport copy

    • Latest photograph

    • Signature

  4. No need to visit VFS unless specifically requested


Name Change / Discrepancy in OCI Application

Common Discrepancy Scenarios:

  • Surname misplaced or merged with first name

  • Name changed after marriage

  • Spelling difference in documents (birth cert vs passport)

  • Different names in UK passport vs Indian origin documents

Required Actions:

  • Provide affidavit explaining the name change

  • Submit supporting documents such as:

    • Marriage certificate

    • Deed poll / name change certificate

Recent Circulars on OCI (Key Highlights)

As per MHA Circular dated 15 March 2021 and updates from Indian Missions:

  • OCI card need not be reissued every time passport is renewed for those:

    • Below 20 years or above 50 years

  • Only need to upload documents online
